More About Everett, Washington
Lying some 25 miles north of Seattle at the mouth of the Snohomish River on Possession Sound, Everett is a community linked intimately with water. Although its economy has long been based on logging, it is the sea that gives Everett its color and its character.
For one, Everett is home to the largest public marina on the West Coast. In 1984, Everett was selected to be the site of the U.S. Navy Homeport; Naval Station Everett opened in 1992 and is now the home port of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. The Port of Everett is itself a major shipping complex that serves as a key link in world commerce. In 2006, a major redevelopment project was launched along the city's extensive waterfront involving construction of new maritime businesses, retail facilities and condominium apartments.
The waterfront is also a favorite gathering place for social events and entertainment. Each September, 10th Street Park is home to the annual Everett Coho Derby while each August the marina promenade is festooned with local art during the Fresh Paint Festival of Artists.
The sea also plays a major role in Everett's weather, moderating temperatures in both winter and summer. In January, average daytime highs are in the mid-40s while July and August highs rarely climb above the mid-70s.
Everett offers numerous venues for outdoor recreation. Major city parks include Walter E. Hall Park, Forest Park, Lagunus Riverfront Park, Kasch Park, Howarth Park, Jetty Island, Nishiyama Garden and Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens.
In downtown Everett, residents and visitors can enjoy performances at the Everett Performing Arts Center, which houses the Village Theater, Everett Theater, the Imagine Children's Museum and the Arts Council of Snohomish County. The Everest Civic Auditorium is home of the Everett Symphony, which has been thrilling audiences regularly since 1935.
No discussion of Everett is complete without mentioning that it's the home of Boeing Aircraft's largest assembly facility. The building, which is used to build 747s, 767s, 777s and the new 787 passenger jet, is the largest building in the world by volume.
If you live in or near Everett, you know what a wonderful city it is.
